Dell Moves Into Backup Appliance Market

(Dell)’s new DL2000 backup appliances play the company’s first backup gadgets directed at the midmarket, supplying those SMBs that consider Dell as their primary technology vendor with a turnkey backup-to-disk solution. Dell is packing a 2U serverĀ  with its MD1000 SAS attached SAS/SATA JBOD outer cabinets and heightened versions of either Symantec’s Backup Exec or CommVault’s Simpana backup.

The bundle economizes a system admin the day or so it would usually take to set up an OS and install the backup software. It includes custom extensions to the backup package and geniuses to simplify the process of establishing RAID sets and LUNs, so the poor overworked SMB IT guy or consultant can get the system up and running in a couple of hours.

Base systems, which should cost $10,000 to $15,000, include 3 TB of disk and can grow to 180 TB (Raw) or 144 TB (useable)
